Winster: A Hidden Gem in the Peak District
Tucked into the hillside in the heart of the Peak District, Winster is one of those places that feels like you’ve stepped away from modern life. With its stone cottages, winding lanes and far-reaching views, it offers a true sense of escape — without feeling remote. It’s a proper village, not a tourist set-piece, and that’s very much part of its charm.
A Village Full of Character
Winster has a long history, reflected in its beautiful stone buildings and traditional layout.
The village feels both timeless and lived-in — somewhere people still say hello, where life carries on at a gentle pace, and where it’s easy to feel at home within a day or two.
Set on a hillside, many parts of the village enjoy lovely views across the surrounding countryside, adding to that sense of space and calm.
Walks from the Doorstep
One of the best things about staying in Winster is how easy it is to head straight out for a walk.
There are footpaths in every direction, whether you’re in the mood for a gentle wander or something a little longer. Within minutes, you can be out in open countryside, surrounded by dry-stone walls, rolling fields and wide skies.
It’s the kind of place where you can simply step outside and see where the path takes you.
Lancaster Cottage is perfectly located to enjoy everything Winster has to offer, yet it is tucked away, off-road. This gives it the feeling of being properly rural and surrounded by nature.
A Slower Pace of Life
Life in Winster moves slowly.
You’ll hear birdsong more than traffic, church bells marking the hours, and the sounds of sheep and cows from the surrounding fields. It’s a place where time seems to stretch out a little — making it easy to relax and settle into your stay.
Whether you’re reading in the garden, heading out for a short walk or simply enjoying the quiet, there’s a natural rhythm here that encourages you to slow down.
Perfect for a Romantic Escape
For couples, Winster offers something increasingly rare — a sense of rural calm and space, without feeling remote. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic Peak District break with lazy mornings, cosy evenings and time spent properly unwinding.
Whether you’re here for a short break or a longer stay, it’s very easy to settle into the rhythm of village life.
Perfectly Placed for Exploring
While Winster feels peaceful and tucked away, it’s also ideally located for exploring the wider Peak District.
It is perfectly situated for exploring the White and Dark Peak areas. Some of the best walks and historic houses in the country are only a short drive away including Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall. Bakewell is a lovely town to explore, with lots of interesting shops and cute cafes. There is enough here to keep you busy for years.
You can spend the day exploring further afield, then return to the village — and it always feels calmer when you come back.
Once you are here, there is no need to get in the car again – everything you need for your stay is on your doorstep.
Local Pubs & Places to Eat
If you can tear yourself away from the garden, it is just a few minutes to our friendly and welcoming Winster pubs.
The Old Bowling Green has been around since the 15th Century and has regular pop-up pizza nights or enjoy some great views from the 17th century Miners Standard. Both pubs have outside seating areas and real fires inside for the chillier months.
The Miner’s Standard also runs Bank Cafe which is open in the mornings for breakfast, cakes and drinks. Also within walking distance are The Druid’s Inn and The Red Lion in Birchover – both are wonderful pubs.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxed drink after a walk or a cosy evening meal, there are plenty of options nearby without needing to travel far.
