Panoramic view of the Peak District landscape

Exploring the Peak District

The Peak District is a very special place. Not just because of its beautiful landscapes — which are genuinely spectacular — but because of what it represents.

As the UK’s first National Park, it’s a landscape shaped not only by nature, but by a powerful story about access, freedom and the simple desire to spend time outdoors.

Staying at Lancaster Cottage places you right in the heart of it all — perfectly positioned to explore at your own pace.

A Landscape Shaped by History

In 1932, a group of walkers staged what became known as the Kinder Trespass.

At the time, much of the surrounding moorland was privately owned and out of bounds to ordinary people. Hundreds of ramblers deliberately walked onto Kinder Scout in protest, demanding the right to access the countryside. Several were arrested, but the movement gathered momentum and helped change public access laws.

Nearly twenty years later, the Peak District National Park was created — a lasting legacy of that determination to make wild places open to everyone.

Today, the park covers around 555 square miles and remains one of the most accessible national parks in the UK.

Walking in the Peak District

Walking is, of course, one of the main reasons people visit — and it’s easy to see why.

From gentle countryside strolls to more challenging hikes, the Peak District offers an incredible variety of routes. You can spend a few quiet hours wandering through valleys and dales, or head out for a full day exploring the more dramatic landscapes further afield.

And if you’re not feeling especially energetic, a scenic drive with a pub stop along the way can be just as enjoyable.

The White Peak – Rolling Hills and Limestone Dales

Lancaster Cottage is located in the heart of the White Peak, an area known for its softer, more pastoral landscape.

Here, limestone geology creates rolling farmland, dry stone walls, pretty villages and beautiful river valleys. It’s a landscape that feels calm, green and endlessly walkable.

Some of the most beautiful areas nearby include:

  • Milldale
  • Monsal Dale
  • Chee Dale
  • Cressbrook Dale
  • Lathkill Dale

All are within a short drive and perfect for some stunning walks and a relaxed day out.

The Dark Peak – Wild and Dramatic

To the north, less than 20 minutes drive away, lies the Dark Peak — a striking contrast to the prettier White Peak.

This area is characterised by open moorland, gritstone edges and wide, sweeping views. It feels bigger, wilder and more rugged, particularly on misty days when the landscape takes on a more atmospheric quality.

Here you’ll find some of the Peak District’s most iconic locations:

  • Curbar Edge, Baslow Edge, Froggatt Edge (all within 20 minutes beautiful drive)
  • Kinder Scout
  • Stanage Edge
  • Bleaklow

All are easily reached by car and offer unforgettable views and walking routes. Then you can return to the peace of Winster.

Villages, History and Places to Visit

Beyond the landscapes, the Peak District is rich in history and character.

You’ll find everything from ancient stone circles and old packhorse bridges to grand stately homes such as:

  • Chatsworth House
  • Haddon Hall

Exploring these places adds another layer to your stay — whether you’re interested in history, architecture or simply a good walk followed by a cup of tea somewhere beautiful.

Scattered throughout the Peak District are charming villages and historic towns, each with its own unique character. Lancaster Cottage is within a 15 minute drive of Bakewell, Matlock, Matlock Bath and Wirksworth.

Wildlife and Nature

The Peak District is also home to a surprising variety of wildlife.

On the moors, you may hear the distinctive call of curlews, while in the dales you’ll find wildflowers, birds and flowing rivers. Deer are often spotted near villages (particularly at dusk — something to be aware of when driving), and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of more elusive species.

A Place to Slow Down

More than anything, the Peak District is a place to slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with nature.

Whether you spend your days walking, exploring or simply enjoying the views, there’s a rhythm here that encourages you to take things a little more gently.

We’re incredibly lucky to have it on our doorstep — and we hope you enjoy discovering it just as much as we do.
