As a local, I’m lucky to have so many fantastic pubs with beer gardens in the Peak District right on my doorstep. If you’re staying at Lancaster Cottage, here are some of my favourite places for a relaxed drink, a good meal, and a peaceful outdoor spot to soak up the scenery. All are within easy reach and dog friendly too.
1. The Sycamore Inn, Parwich
Distance: ~15 min drive | Website: Robinsons – The Sycamore
A picture-perfect country pub tucked beside the village green in pretty Parwich. It’s full of rustic charm, with a sun-trap beer garden and cosy interiors.
Highlights:
- Classic homemade pub dishes (the steak & ale pie is a local favourite)
- Robinsons ales on tap
- Dog-friendly and full of character
Best for: A quiet pint after a countryside stroll.
2. The Miner’s Arms, Carsington
Distance: ~15 min drive | Website: The Miner’s Arms
Right near Carsington Water, this pub is a favourite with walkers and cyclists. There’s plenty of outdoor seating, and a welcoming, relaxed feel.
Highlights:
- Hearty pub grub
- Dog- and family-friendly with a big beer garden
- Perfect after a walk by the reservoir
Best for: A lazy lunch in the sun.
3. The Gate Inn, Brassington
Distance: ~less than 10 min drive | Website: The Gate Inn
A charming old inn in the centre of Brassington, with a pretty beer garden and friendly atmosphere. Great food and often very peaceful.
Highlights:
- Traditional Peak District feel
- Dog biscuits behind the bar!
- Lovely garden seating
Best for: Dinner and drinks on a warm evening.
4. The Ashford Arms, Ashford-in-the-Water
Distance: ~5 miles | Website: The Ashford Arms
Beautifully renovated and serving seasonal dishes in a peaceful riverside village. There’s a retractable-roof garden area for all-weather alfresco dining.
Highlights:
- Upscale pub food using local produce
- Good veggie, vegan and GF options
- Riverside setting
Best for: A long, lazy lunch.
5. Stables Bar at Monsal Head
Distance: ~15 min drive | Website: Monsal Head Hotel – Stables Bar
With jaw-dropping views over Monsal Dale and the famous viaduct, this is a great place to soak up the scenery. Walkers and dogs welcome!
Highlights:
- Unbeatable views
- Local ales on tap
- Generous portions
Best for: A well-earned drink post-hike.
5. Packhorse Inn, Little Longstone
Distance: ~15 min drive | Website: Packhorse Inn
A traditional village pub just steps from the Monsal Trail. The covered pergola seating is perfect for enjoying the garden whatever the weather.
Highlights:
- Top-notch pub classics
- Cosy atmosphere
- Heated outdoor space
Best for: Dinner after a day on the Monsal Trail.
6. Devonshire Arms, Beeley (plus breakfast at The Old Smithy)
Distance: ~6 miles | Website: Devonshire Arms, The Old Smithy
Set on the Chatsworth Estate, the Devonshire Arms offers refined dining in a stylish setting, with a lovely outdoor area. Next door, The Old Smithy is great for brunch.
Highlights:
- Estate-sourced ingredients
- Sophisticated but relaxed vibe
- The Old Smithy’s breakfasts are amazing
Best for: A special meal or leisurely breakfast.
7. The Royal Oak, Hurdlow
Distance: ~15 min drive | Website: Royal Oak Hurdlow
A characterful stone pub offering hearty food and a real local welcome. There’s outdoor seating for sunny days, and a great walking route nearby. I love this place – the food is truly excellent.
Highlights:
- Excellent pies and pub classics
- Walker- and dog-friendly
- Cosy and traditional
Best for: A proper pub lunch after exploring the hills.
